Newsletter – SUGAR TRANSFER PNEUMATIC UPGRADE
A southern Ontario blending & co-packaging producer for multinationals in the food and beverage industries required a semi automated sugar transfer system upgrade. This required doubling the through put in production.
The system required 8 metric tons per hour of additional granulated sugar. The existing system had an undersized filter receiver and use bin. The project was completed in 2 stages.
First stage
A new 2 metric ton use bin was designed to fit into a very vertically challenged location, with load cells for batching of the sugar and minor ingredients, over a 2 tonne mixer.
A new filter receiver was required with oversized capacity to accommodate additional sugar and minor adjustments.
Second stage
The next stage generated the need for additional transfer & storage of sugar.
Sugar use was determined to be received in 2 metric ton bulk bags. A larger PDB (positive displacement blower) was incorporated for the new pneumatic conveying system. Between the PD blower and super sack unloading stations, a heat exchanger was installed to reduce the air temperature and prevent glazing of the sugar in the pipes.
Three [3 MTU-4000 Metso Best] bulk bag unloaders with options of electric hoists, weighing system controls and bag agitators were installed. Each bulk bag unloader required a rotary valve with special rotors “for sugar” on the outlets. The final component was an additional very large stainless filter receiver [Hertech], that was also fitted into another limited space area.
In house PLC controls upgraded and tied into the existing corporate system.
With the production upgrades, the systems are now in full operation and meet both the customer’s increased capacity & high equipment standards.
